Call for Research Publications: 2026 Publication Count

Department of Higher Education (DHET) policy-related information

Journals

The DHET has introduced a new journal lookup tool called the ZA Publications Monitor. The tool helps users check whether a journal is eligible for DHET subsidy. The Journal Finder is available at:

At present, the tool contains the same list of subsidy-eligible journals provided by the DHET for the 2026 publication year, but in a more accessible and searchable format.

CREST, in consultation with the DHET, plans to further improve and refine this database over time. Researchers are therefore encouraged to use the ZA Publications Monitor as their first point of reference when checking whether a journal is eligible for DHET subsidy before submitting their work for publication.

DHET-approved conferences

  • The DHET has decided to suspend the DHET list of accredited conferences until more stringent and permanent criteria are introduced. Only conference proceedings publications that meet the criteria laid out in the DHET’s research outputs policy will be subsidised.

Best Practice Guidelines for Scholarly Book and Conference Publishing

This guideline from the Academy of Science of South Africa provides an overview of best practices for the publication of scholarly books, edited collections, and conference proceedings, including peer review requirements, ethical standards, and technical considerations relevant to research assessment and DHET reporting.
