Open Access Journal Publication Fund (OAJPF)

The URC Open Access Journal Publication Fund (OAJPF) has been established to support UCT researchers with the publication of their research output in open access journals. The Fund is intended to contribute to Article Processing Charges (APCs) for articles accepted in journals found on the Department of Higher Education and Training’s (DHET)list of accredited journals. The article must also adhere to the Publication Count guidelines(i.e. be original articles, research letters, research papers and review articles).

Page Cost

These grants are intended to contribute towards page costs of articles in journals accredited by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), or to provide a contribution to the publishing of a book that may earn DHET subsidy.

All applications for the URC Page Costs and the Open Access Journal Publication Fund (article processing charges) are submitted to the Research Office via UCT’s Research Portal on the electronic Research Administration (eRA) system

  • Institutional Open Access Memberships

    BioMed Central Institutional Membership

The University of Cape Town is part of Springer Nature’s membership program for journals in the BMC open access portfolios. UCT actively supports open access by an agreement of discounted article processing charges (APCs) for our affiliated authors.

Once an article has been editorially accepted, the corresponding author receives an email invitation to complete the publication process for their article. At this stage, the corresponding author will be able to identify themselves as being affiliated with the University of Cape Town. When an author’s eligibility is confirmed, the 50% discount is applied and the article is published open access.

The workflow for authors is available here.

Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute - MDPI

UCT has  joined MDPI's Institutional Open Access Program (IOAP), which means authors are eligible for a 10% discount on APCs once your paper is accepted for publication

    APC Discounts

“Authors affiliated with participating universities receive a 10% discount on the APCs for any paper published in an MDPI journal. Note that only one discount through an IOAP scheme is permitted per paper, and the discount cannot be combined with other available discounts (e.g., discount vouchers, or society membership discounts).”
