  • Annotation

    A descriptive or analytic commentary, referring to a document or audio, image, video or data record. The added notations may include transcriptions and sense tagging, syntactic or semantic analysis or inline comments and are intended to help the interpretation or offer a critical evaluation of the base document or record.

  • Anthology

    A collection of extracts or complete works by various authors, selected by an editor for publication in a single volume or multivolume set. Anthologies are often limited to a specific literary form or genre or to a national literature, theme, time period, or category of author.

  • Collection

  • Commentary

    A written explanation or criticism or illustration that is added to a book or other textual material.

  • Editorial

    An evaluative account of a recently published journal article, by one or more authors, for publication in a current newspaper, magazine, or journal.

  • Legal opinion

    A written statement by a court, judicial officer or legal expert as to the legality, or illegality, of an action, condition or intent.

  • Letter

    A relatively short communication sent from a single author or group of authors to a specified addressee on a given topic.

  • Letter to editor

    A letter, usually printed at the discretion of the publisher, on the editorial page of a newspaper or magazine, in which a reader expresses his or her views on the subject of a previously published article or editorial, or on the editorial policy of the publication in general, sometimes followed by a brief response from the editor(s).

  • Manual

    A book or pamphlet containing practical instructions, rules, or steps for performing a task or operation, assembling a manufactured object, or using a system or piece of equipment. Used synonymously with handbook.

  • Newsclipping

    An article authored by a single author or group of authors and published in a newspaper or magazine.

  • Policy

    A principles document, detailing rules, guidelines and/ or roles and responsibilities aimed at a specific target audience.

  • Press article

    An article authored by a single or group of authors and published in a newspaper or magazine.

  • Product

    An object, item or substance that is being produced and will be marketed.

  • Prototype

    An original working model, sample or release of a new product.

  • Report

    A separately published record of research findings, research still in progress, or other technical findings, usually bearing a report number and sometimes a grant number assigned by the funding agency.

  • Short communication

    A concise, but independent, report representing a significant contribution to a subject.

  • Software

    The programs and procedures required to enable a computer to perform a specific task, as opposed to the physical components of the system.

  • Special lecture

    A once-off oral presentation intended to present information about a particular subject, for example inaugural lectures and departmental lectures.

  • Working paper

    A preliminary scientific or technical paper made available for commentary, discussion, or feedback. A report written by an official committee or group appointed to investigate some aspect of law, education, health, etc., often containing recommendations for action based on its findings.
