Criteria for subsidising books

Books and chapters that disseminate original research and that meet the following criteria may be submitted for the publication count: 

  • The purpose of the book must be to disseminate original research and new developments in a specific discipline.
  • The book must be peer-reviewed as a research output prior to publication, and supporting evidence of peer-review must be provided in the book or from the publishers.
  • The book must have an ISBN.
  • The length of the book must be a minimum of 60 pages, excluding references, bibliography, appendices.
  • The target audience of the book must be specialists in the relevant field.
  • If the book is published in a language other than English, the author must submit a summary of the entire book in English (minimum of one page). Similarly, any supporting evidence or documentation must also be provided in English.
  • The minimum contribution from a book that will be considered for evaluation will be a complete division of a book such as a chapter.

Electronic copies of the book Uploaded electronic copy of chapter and the page (to confirm: ISBN, Publication year, Editor, Publisher etc). In the case of an authored book, the full copy has been uploaded.
Statement of the publisher’s peer-review process Evidence of the pre-publication peer review process must be provided for every book or chapter submitted for subsidy. This detailed, clear and unambiguous statement must come from the publisher.
Statement from the author A written statement (< 500 words), signed by the author of the book, or general editor (in the case of an edited book), explaining the contribution that the book makes to scholarship. This should include a declaration that no part of the work was plagiarised or published elsewherAe.
Affiliation to UCT This letter is important if there is no indication of author affiliation in the actual publication
Motivation for late claim This is required for books that were not published in time for submission during the previous publication count.
English summary In the event that a book/chapter is published in a language other than English
2nd or later editions Second or later editions being submitted for subsidy, clear evidence of new research must be provided. It is necessary that at least 50% of the publication being claimed must have not been published previously.
 Relevant sections of the electronic book/chapter to be tagged using bookmarks. Tags used in the case of a phyiscal Authored book (where electronic copies are not available) Please tag or bookmark the electronic copies of the following sections in each book:

An internal screening process is implemented by UCT prior to submission to the DHET, to ensure that only books that meet DHET criteria are being submitted. Books without a detailed statement of peer-review will not be considered by UCT or the DHET.
 
The following are NOT acceptable for submission

a.  Dissertations and theses;
b.  Text books, professional handbooks, manuals and study guides;
c.  Reference books, Dictionaries and Encyclopaedias;
d.  Speeches of any type and nature;
e.  Reports forming part of contract research and other commissioned work;
f.   Works of fiction;
g.  Introductions and conclusions (unless the entire book, as a unit, is being submitted for subsidy claim)
h.  Books published as 2nd, 3rd and following editions should not be submitted, unless there is clear evidence of new research must be provided. It is necessary that at least 50% of the publication being claimed must have not been published previously
