The 2024 annual Piano Exchange features works that blend jazz and classical styles in a fusion termed by South African composer, classical and jazz pianist Surendran Reddy as his unique composition style which he called ‘clazz’.

The UCT Symphonic Wind Ensemble, comprising of about forty-five under- and post-graduate students perform their second concert of 2024, conducted by Brandon Phillips.

Some of the top performers from the SACM who successfully auditioned to perform at this festival will play alongside the University of Cape Town Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Brandon Phillips.

UCT Symphony Orchestra performs the premiere of an overture titled “Ukuthwasa” composed by student composer James Geldenhuys. UCT’s Gerhard Joubert performs Chopin Piano Concerto No. 1 and the concert ends with Brahms Symphony No. 3.

What began as a friendly rivalry between two composition students, the Cone of Composition Competition has turned into an annual tradition at UCT’s South African College of Music (SACM).
