UCT’s Media and Social Media unit communicates to internal and external audiences about university programmes, research and the activities of faculties and staff. We work closely with UCT’s executive management in planning the release of news and information to both the UCT community and our diverse external audiences through both traditional and social media.

Our proactive media relations campaign profiles UCT in the local, regional, national, international, professional and specialist media. We publicise events, successes and innovations; write, target and issue news releases; update students on important notices, research developments and campus events; brief journalists; respond to enquiries from journalists, media researchers and social media; and promote UCT staff as expert commentators on TV, radio and social media.

The media liaison office issues official media releases and statements to highlight some of the key university activities as well as developments around – among others – the executive, staff and students. The office also serves to connect the media with UCT academics and subject matter experts.

Campus communications

The University of Cape Town has a diverse and widely distributed community, which includes students, academic staff, PASS staff, alumni, parents, guardians and more. In order to keep this community updated about recent, ongoing and future events, the university distributes regular communications from the executive. These take the form of VC Desks, which are messages from the Vice-Chancellor concerning important events on campus; DVC Desks, which include university-related communications from each of the Deputy Vice-Chancellors; and Campus Announcements, which are released at least once a week to update the UCT community about ongoing events and to give notice of upcoming events on the various campuses.
