Ms Nazeema Mohamed
Nazeema Mohamed is a seasoned consultant with extensive experience in higher education, nonprofit management, governance, strategic planning, and diversity, equity, and inclusion. Currently, she consults to the Institute for African Alternatives and the AfroAsia Cultural Hub, advising on resource mobilisation and programming. In addition to her consulting work, Nazeema manages the art business ZaraDidit, owned by the talented artist, Zara Newman. She also serves on the Board of South African History Online.
Nazeema is an expert in embedding social justice and equity strategies in university transformation and governance. Her expertise in university and nonprofit governance and management has been sought by institutions across South Africa. Nazeema has served on the Transformation Directors’ Forum of Universities South Africa (USAf) and the Ministerial National Oversight Committee on Transformation in Higher Education. After stepping down from the Transformation Directors’ Forum, she continues to be consulted for her insights on university transformation.
Nazeema has served on two Councils of the University of Cape Town (UCT). She has held the position of Deputy Chair of UCT’s Council and chaired the University Naming Committee. Her committee work at UCT includes being a member of the University Executive Committee, the University Renumerations Committee, the University Social Ethics and Transformation Committee, the University Student Affairs Committee, and the University’s Institutional Forum.
Her professional journey spans national and international engagements, with significant contributions to policy and legislative task teams in higher education. Nazeema has been appointed to several ministerial committees, including the Governance Task Team of the National Education Policy Initiative, the Governance Task Team of the National Commission on Higher Education, the sub-committee on Vision and Principles of the Further Education and Training Commission and she has served on the Umalusi Board.
Nazeema’s international roles include serving on advisory panels such as the British Council Advisory Committee for its annual conference, Going Global in Higher Education, and the SADC Education and Training Committee. She has also recently participated in the Benchmarks Advisory Teams for both the Global Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Benchmarks and the Global Ethics Benchmarks.
Additionally, Nazeema has been a member of the Gender Education Committee set up by former Minister Naledi Pandor of the Department of Higher Education and Training and has been actively involved in work on gender equity, anti-racism, intersectionality and gender-based violence for over 35 years.
