Programme title: Co-creating knowledge with communities who have a hidden history of slavery

Hosted by: Dr Saima Nasar, Department of History, University of Bristol

Programme summary

The project aims to explore how researchers can do ethical research and co-create knowledge with slave descendants so that the hidden histories of slavery can inform higher education policy and practice, but also broader policy related to city planning, built environment and ethical remembrance in cities such as Cape Town and Bristol. In addition, socially just ways to acknowledge the intergenerational trauma of slavery and its ongoing historical injustice will also be explored. The impact of the project will benefit higher education and broader society by engaging with communities who have limited knowledge on their heritage due to historical injustice. The project will contribute to local, national, and international knowledge on reparations for historical injustices. New knowledge which challenges historical harms or narratives which have been damaging to individuals and communities will be produced. The project aims to influence policy which affect communities who have been harmed through historical injustice.
