UCT International Student Exchange Programme
What is Student Exchange?
The UCT International Student Exchange Programme gives you the opportunity to spend part of your degree studying at one of UCT's international partner universities while continuing to make progress towards your qualification.
During your exchange, you remain registered as a UCT student and enrol at a partner university for one semester. You will also register for your normal studies at UCT by enrolling in the relevant exchange course and paying the equivalent UCT tuition fee for a full semester's course load.
At the end of your exchange, you will return to UCT to complete your degree. Credits earned at the partner university are transferred towards your UCT degree requirements, helping you stay on track to graduate on time.
While on Exchange, You Will Need To:
- Remain registered as a UCT student.
- Enrol in your faculty's exchange course at UCT and pay the applicable UCT tuition fee.
- Select courses at the partner university that can be approved for credit towards your UCT degree.
- Complete a full semester's course load at the partner university.
As part of the exchange agreement, you do not pay tuition fees to the partner university, unless you choose to take additional courses that fall outside the exchange programme.

Discover the life-changing experience of studying abroad through the stories of UCT students who have participated in exchange programmes at partner universities around the world.
In the videos below, students share their academic, cultural, and personal experiences, reflecting on how studying abroad broadened their perspectives, developed their confidence, and enriched their university journey.
When will I go on exchange?
Most students participate in an exchange programme during the second semester of their studies. As most partner universities require students to have completed at least one full year at their home institution before going abroad:
- Bachelor's students typically go on exchange in the second semester of their second year. Students enrolled in four-year degree programmes generally go on exchange in the second semester of their third year.
- Master's students (coursework programmes) usually go on exchange in the second semester of their first or second year.
- Research Master's (dissertation only) and PhD students undertaking co-supervision may apply to go on exchange at any stage of their studies, subject to academic approval.
Who can apply for an exchange programme?
Exchange opportunities are open to students registered for full-degree undergraduate and postgraduate programmes at the University of Cape Town (UCT).
To be eligible, students must meet both the University and partner institution requirements. Timing for exchange depends on your level of study and degree structure:
- Undergraduate students must have completed at least one full year of study before going on exchange. Due to curriculum regulations, exit-level courses cannot be transferred from another institution. As a result, undergraduate students are generally eligible to participate in the second semester of their second year (or third year for four-year degree programmes).
- Coursework postgraduate students normally undertake exchange during the second semester of their first or second year.
Research Master's and PhD students pursuing co-supervision arrangements may apply throughout their degree, subject to faculty approval.

- Attend a Student Exchange information session.
- Research UCT's partner universities to identify institutions that offer courses aligned with your degree requirements.
- Review any additional academic or programme-related costs that may not be included in the exchange.
- Research the cost of living in your chosen destination, including accommodation, daily expenses, and return airfare.
- Consult your faculty academic advisor, programme convenor, or Head of Department to discuss your study plan and course selection.
Eligibility requirements
To be considered for an exchange programme, you must:
- Have completed your first year of study before the exchange period.
- Meet the minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) requirement:
- 65% or above for students in the redress category.
- 70% or above for students in the non-redress (open) category.

Selection process
Applicants who meet the eligibility requirements may be shortlisted for an interview with the Student Exchange Selection Committee. During the interview, the committee assesses your academic suitability, motivation, and preparedness for studying abroad before making placement recommendations to UCT's international partner universities.
