Big prospects for HYENA
One thing about UCT Research Contracts & Innovation ? We get to be involved with some amazing technologies. Hydrogen Energy Applications (HYENA), a RC&I-supported spin-off company from the Department of Chemical Engineering is making strides in the energy space.
HYENA’s core business is hydrogen-based electric power applications, mainly as standalone systems of small to medium size. The focus lies on electric power sources comprising integrated hydrogen generators and fuel cells, to produce electricity in the range of 5 to 20 kWe.
At the recently held Annual General Meeting (AGM) at their new premises at Westlake Business Park, the exciting news that the minimum viable product (MVP) linking their unit that produces hydrogen from LPG gas to a hydrogen fuel cell to create electricity will be completed within the next quarter. The two units that will be combined are shown in the photo behind the HYENA team. This first of its kind invention for the company is sure to make waves, especially with ongoing loadshedding, as the units will be quiet and greener solutions compared to a diesel generator.
