In her book 'Innovation', Sarah Wild mentions that "While ‘science’ is the pursuit of knowledge, ‘technology’ is the application of that knowledge, the kind that can be used by people to improve their lives and their circumstances.” RC&I is excited to announce an exhibition to celebrate World Intellectual Property Day starting on 26th April 2017 themed “Improving Lives through Innovation. The exhibitions will be held at the Medical Campus’ Wolfson Pavilion building on Monday, April 24, 2017, and at Upper Campus – Engineering & the Built Environment on Wednesday, April 26, 2017.

We will be showcasing some of the inventions emanating from UCT’s research that primarily makes our lives healthier, safer, and turning problems into progress. These technologies also demonstrate UCT’s very own success stories in addressing real problems in various disciplines including environment, energy, health and engineering.

The quest to finding solutions to challenges such as climate change and its impact, food insecurities and to seemingly insignificant everyday problems through research illustrate the university's ability to translate problems into solutions for the benefit of the communities.

As we celebrate UCT innovation and remember some of our UCT alumni, e.g. Allan MacLeod Cormack, whom the RC&I building is named after, who  invented computerized tomography (CT) scanning in 1963, we invite researchers and students to join us as we commemorate World IP Day.  Also there will be a competition, so come along, participate and stand a chance to win great prizes.

The event and prizes are kindly funded by the DST's National IP Management Office (NIPMO), whose support is gratefully acknowledged.
