UCT exhibits at the 6th World Sustainability Forum
At the end of January, UCT in conjunction with UWC, hosted the 6th World Sustainabilty Forum. The forum brings together researchers, policymakers, practitioners and the public and private sectors. RC&I’s exhibition stand at the event showcased four UCT technologies that are making an “Impact through Sustainable Innovation”. These spanned fishing, hydrogen fuel cells, power distribution and drought tolerant crops. See the full banner wall design here.
A “Future Society” banner wall cartoon showing the application of UCT inventions across South Africa also garnered a great deal of interest.
One of the technologies, “Abalobi”, is transforming the artisanal fisher sector by enabling catch monitoring through a mobile app and also, in a Technology Innovation Agency (TIA) funded Seed project, building a “Marketplace” module that will link fishers directly with restaurants and retailers interested in purchasing their fish.
An important point made at the conference is that technology transfer from universities goes way beyond patents – policy briefs also demonstrate research impact through innovation.
The banner walls were created using funding received from the National IP Management Office (NIPMO).
