Exciting Angel Investment Opportunity
Due to rheumatic heart disease (RHD), around 70 million people in the developing world including the BRIC countries need replacement heart valves. As these procedures are complex, and the infrastructure insufficient or not available, many of these patients die before the age of 25. So the need that SAT aims to address with its innovative products is significant.
We regard this as a start-up, as opposed to spin-off, company as the IP was developed outside of UCT, but UCT does have shareholding in Southern Access Technologies (Pty) Ltd due to the close synergies and facility requirements going forward, as well as with UCT being a hub for training in cardiothoracic surgery in Africa. In addition to UCT other three shareholders are the inventors. The Agency will be negotiating a royalty (i.e. they will not take equity).
Whilst around R3.5 million needs to be invested, the co-investor(s) although needing to commit to the full investment, would match the timing of the Agency draw-downs so the amount would actually be required over a 3-year period and milestone assessments would occur prior to the release of the next tranche of funding, etc.
SAT believes that they have the ability to develop products that will not only generate profits but will also improve the lives of millions of young people who currently die prematurely. They are seeking investors who can share this desire to "do well whilst doing good".
