Eye on Contracts Newsletter
Welcome to our first edition of Eye on Contracts, a publication designed to keep the UCT research community up to date with research contracts and RC&I processes! It also aims to provide you with some insight into the various initiatives we’re undertaking to streamline contracting with our funders, collaborators, and commercial partners.
If you’re wondering about the bird on the cover – it’s a bit of a play on “Legal Eagles” – and it’s a bit more exciting than a pic of a contract!

Route to Market
RC&I created two Route-to-Market (R2M) guides that provide an overview of how medical devices and pharmaceutical products reach the market.
The R2M series is developed using funding from the Department of Science and Technology’s National Intellectual Property Office (NIPMO). Each booklet focuses on a specific sector/product type and highlights the key steps and considerations in bringing such a product to market in that sector – with an emphasis on the local South African context, i.e. bringing research outputs into the marketplace and achieving “impact through innovation”.

SHAPE Researcher Guide
RC&I in collaboration with the British Council, the University of the Western Cape, Oxentia, and the Story Room developed the Social Sciences, Humanities, and Arts for People and the Environment (SHAPE) Researcher Guide. A culmination of collaborative efforts aimed at fortifying the innovation framework within South African universities, particularly in SHAPE.
