The importance of industry-academia collaboration
At University of Cape Town (UCT), we have a number of successful inventors / innovators who either spent time working in industry, or took an industry sabbatical that has changed their paradigm and approach to their university research. There are a range of modes of collaboration from industry-sponsored bursary programmes, to consulting and larger collaborative multi-year research programmes. Collaboration with industry is a great way of steering research outputs to maximise their impact. One just needs to be cogniscant of the differing perspectives of what a successful project means to the academic and industry partners and design the collaboration to provide the outputs that will satisfy both parties.
