Starting her career off at UCT Radio, Sam Lehoko (aka Sammy Sosa), has gone on to make waves in the radio, broadcasting and entertainment industry. Starting out as an Arts and Photography student, she discovered her untapped passion for radio during her time at UCT Radio.

In 2010, at the fresh age of 21, Lehoko began the photography company SML Photography (www.smlphotography.com), where her passion for photography could both thrive and turn a profit, complimenting her passion for business. Although she enjoyed the radio experience she gained through UCT Radio, she never thought radio could become a career. However, after just a few short years, she got a job at Yfm and made her way into national airwaves at Metro FM.

Lehoko worked on Club 808 for Etv doing their gig guide and later moved to Channel O. She is now one of the faces of Channel O, along with K- Naomi and Scoop. Recently she has also started working on V Prime (a division of VUZU) as a presenter. On Metro FM, alongside Mo Flava, she hosts the 8am till 10am show.

To grow her career in the various fields, she has had to make the move from the laid-back Cape Town to the fast-paced lifestyle of Johannesburg. To people aspiring to make it big, she says you have to keep up in the hustle and bustle of it all; if you can’t keep up you will fall behind.

“It’s just about going out there and following your dreams, you know, and being passionate about what you do and taking every single opportunity, and that’s what I’ve done”. Lehoko says this is important if one wants to succeed in the industry. In her interview with UCT Radio, Lehoko stated that every decision that she has made was decided within an hour. Quick and sometimes impulsive choices are required in the fast-paced culture of the entertainment industry. As the cliché saying goes: The show must go on.

“You won’t know unless you actually try, nothing is ever guaranteed, you might, you know, not be the most successful radio jock in the industry. But at least you know that you went out there and you took the opportunities.” –Sam Lehoko

Lehoko is evidence that with passion and hard work anyone can achieve success. You never know, the next Sammy Sosa could be sitting behind one of UCT Radio’s microphones right now. It could even be you.

“Lightning never ever strikes twice, so if there’s something that presents itself you have to take it with both arms.”- Sam Lehoko
