The Climate Justice portfolio focuses on addressing climate and environmental challenges through a systems-level, justice-centred approach, with a strong emphasis on the African context.
At its core, the portfolio recognises that climate change is not only an environmental issue, but also a social, economic, and political challenge—one that disproportionately affects marginalised communities. Its work therefore centres on understanding and reshaping the systems that drive inequality, environmental harm, and exclusion.
Our goals are to:
- Apply systems thinking to understand how climate, economic, social, and governance systems interact, and where meaningful leverage points for change exist
- Advance climate justice, ensuring that responses to climate change are equitable, inclusive, and centred on those most affected—particularly in the Global South
- Build leadership and capacity among practitioners, students, policymakers, and organisations to think systemically and act justly in the face of climate complexity
- Research innovation and experimentation that addresses root causes rather than symptoms of climate and environmental crises
- Generate and share knowledge that challenges dominant narratives, interrogates power and privilege, and elevates African perspectives in climate discourse
- Convene diverse stakeholders across sectors to collaborate on transformative climate solutions
