RC&I created two Route-to-Market (R2M) guides that provide an overview of how medical devices and pharmaceutical products reach the market.
The R2M series is developed using funding from the Department of Science and Technology’s National Intellectual Property Office (NIPMO). Each booklet focuses on a specific sector/product type and highlights the key steps and considerations in bringing such a product to market in that sector – with an emphasis on the local South African context, i.e. bringing research outputs into the marketplace and achieving “impact through innovation”.
Technology Transfer professionals generally have to deal with a multitude of inventions that span a broad range of categories. This can be challenging for new entrants to the field as well as to those whose invention falls into a ‘new’ sector that a TTO has not previously worked in. Researchers are often unsure of the steps that lie ahead in the areas of development and innovation that follow once their research has been completed. As the support for creating impact from research outputs grows, researchers are increasingly finding good sources of innovation funding.
