Matthew Mole at Kirstenbosch: Review

This past Sunday I had the privilege of watching a man who, over the last few years, has become synonymous with the Kirstenbosch Summer Sunset Concert and all that it stands for. None other than Matthew Mole.

For years, the Sunset Concerts have been showing off the best and brightest talent that South Africa has to offer. This performance was no different.

However, there was an added nuance to the atmosphere at Kirstenbosch this Sunday as the unrelenting wind and rain of Cape Town took centre stage before Matthew Mole did. Now I’m sure the weather had many of the organizers sweating, but a little rain couldn’t dampen the spirits of a sold out crowd and the show continued in fabulous style.

Matthew Mole performed hit after hit from his debut, iTunes chart topping, album “The Home We Built”, his latest album “Run” and even performed a brand new single he had been working on (we were lucky to be the first people to ever hear this as this was the first time he had every played it!).

It was brilliant to see how Matthew Mole was able to find the perfect mix of lively and contemplative songs, all centred around an incredible drum line. A personal highlight for me, and I’m sure for many others, was when he brought his father on stage and the two performed a duet version of “High and Dry”. A moving moment that would’ve had even the most miserable attendee uttering an “awwhh”.

An unforgettable concert that further cements Matthew Mole’s status as being one of South Africa’s biggest musical talents to date. Looking forward to seeing another one of his sold out Kirstenbosch Summer Sunset Concerts next year
