Kathryn Davies matriculated from St Stithians Girls’ College in 2016. She is currently studying towards a Bachelor of Science in Engineering in Mechatronics. Her love of Mathematics and Science in high school led her to engineering as she hopes to apply principles from these fields to solve real-world problems. Throughout high school and her first two years at university, she has shown her passion for education through her involvement in tutoring programmes, such as Thandalwazi and SHAWCO Education. These programmes aim to assist students from underprivileged communities throughout their secondary school studies and help them realise their potential. In the long term, Kathryn hopes to hold a position in which she can address complex problems in our country by engineering meaningful solutions.

Angela Euston-Brown matriculated from Fish Hoek High School as the top student in 2017. Throughout high school she held multiple leadership positions, including Head Student in her final year. Angela is currently studying towards a Bachelor of Science in Environmental and Geographical Science and Applied Statistics at UCT. With her passion for social justice and social transformation, alongside her strong sense of environmental responsibility, Angela hopes to be a holistic leader and change-maker throughout her life. She is an active participant in UCT’s outreach programme, SHAWCO, and has a vision of transforming the South African Education system through innovative, 21st century teaching strategies and more creative, decolonised and accessible curricula. 

Peace Francis is a 5th Year Medical Student who is currently serving as the Vice President of UCT’s SHAWCO Health and is one of the conveners of the UCT Faculty of Health Sciences’ Curriculum Change Working Group (FHS CCWG). She has led in various university structures and societies in the past including being the chairperson of the Health Sciences Students’ Council and a Subwarden of Carinus House. Her passion lies in the empowering of young Africans to collaboratively, intersectorally and innovatively solve African problems. She hopes to one day influence the continent’s healthcare system by playing a role in the delivery of quality tertiary medical care to those who need it, where they need it by commissioning and training African medical specialists. Her focus is galvanising other Africans for change.

Simbarashe Gomwe completed his A Levels at Gateway High School in Harare, where he served as Head-Boy in 2016. He is currently studying a Bachelor of Laws. Formerly the Head Student of Leo Marquard Hall Residence and a member of Residence Council, Simba is currently a mentor in the law faculty and the Treasurer of the Law Students' Council. He is passionate about literacy and its impact on access to justice and has served in several capacities as a Junior Rotarian Ambassador and volunteer in literacy and multilingual support projects. Simba also loves his coffee and is a hockey enthusiast. 

 

 

Mapulane Makhaba graduated with a Diploma in Computer Systems Engineering at Lerotholi Polytechnic (Lesotho) in 2015. She is a third year BSc (Eng) in Electrical and Computer Engineering student at UCT. She is a computer science tutor, a mentor in Groote Schuur Mansions, Woman in Computer Science (WICS), and the Lesotho Students Association (LESA). She is also part of the UCT Orientation Leaders 2019. Mapulane is passionate about helping young women and empowering them in their academics and other spheres of life. Her vision is to create innovative ways to educate all upcoming learners. She also desires to hold an influential position in future that would enable her to contribute to young people, particularly African children who lack access to good quality education, which will in turn positively impact their lives.

Joshua Mukurazhizha completed his A-Levels in 2015 at Churchill Boys’ High School in Harare, Zimbabwe. He is currently studying for a BScEng specialising in Civil Engineering. He is currently the Chairperson of the EBE Student Council, serves as a mentor for first year Civil Engineering Students and is a volunteer for SHAWCO and the Student Disability Unit. He hopes to start a mentorship programme that seeks to bridge the knowledge gap between secondary and tertiary education for students from disadvantaged backgrounds, especially young women. He believes that Africa’s greatest resource is the potential of its people and unlocking this potential, through education, is the key to Africa’s prosperity. His long-term goal is to be involved in the infrastructural development of Africa and through this, promote economic integration on the continent.

Nuvika Pillay matriculated in 2016 from Kingsmead College. She is currently studying for a Bachelor of Business Science majoring in Economics and Law at the University of Cape Town. She served as a member of the Johannesburg Junior Council and is an alumnus of the Global Youth Leadership Conference. Currently, she is the Director of Human Resources at The Consulting Academy, the first student-run consultancy firm in Cape Town and serves on their management board. She is passionate about social development and creating innovative, sustainable solutions to the problems facing Africa. Her long-term goal involves   being in a position where she can influence public policy to enable greater youth empowerment in Africa.

 

Micaella Rogers matriculated in 2016 from St. Mary’ DSG, Kloof. She is currently studying towards a Bachelor of Social Science majoring in Economics, Psychology and Applied Statistics. Over her time at UCT she has been involved in many leadership structures, serving on the committee of both the UCT Choir and Debating Union in 2018 and is the incoming Vice-Chair and Secretary General for the Debating Union in 2019. Micaella is passionate about social and economic justice and upliftment in Africa and hopes to contribute meaningfully to progress in these areas. In 2017, she was a member of the winning team of the FLUX Business competition which focusses on business solutions to topical social issues, an area that Micaella hopes to be involved in in the future.

Callum Tilbury matriculated in 2016 from Fish Hoek High School as head- and dux student. He is an aspiring creative with passions in both design and mathematics, and at their intersection, he happily finds himself studying towards a BSc(Eng) in Electrical and Computer Engineering at UCT. Here, he is also a peer mentor to first-year students. Outside of university, he is an avid parkrunner, coffee-drinker, musician, and photographer. He is an eager entrepreneur with ambitious dreams of using his skills to create high-impact businesses. In the long-term, he hopes to impact the world in a positive way through innovative solutions to tough socio-economic problems.

 

Alistair White, finished highschool in 2015 at Hillcrest College (Zim). Is currently studying BSc. Eng in Civil Engineering at UCT. He is passionate about leadership in Africa, but more importantly the education of people to develop as leaders. Is a member of the EBE mentoring programme, as well as the Transformation and Development officer for Ultimate Frisbee club. Enjoys the outdoors and spends most of his free time up mountains or taking part in sports. He intends to use his skills gained from his degree to get to a position where he can help influence the redevelopment of settlements as well as help look for renewable solutions for basic infrastructure problems faced in countries in Africa.
