Fatima Docrat matriculated in 2014 from Westerford High School in Cape Town. She is studying for a Bachelor of Commerce degree and majoring in Politics, Philosophy and Economics. She is a member of the UCT Debating Society, the Photographic Society and the United Nations Association of South Africa. She also sits on the committee of the UCT Palestinian Solidarity Forum and of the Muslim Youth Movement. She plays an active role in the Claremont Main Road Mosque Youth Council, where she organizes camps and events to teach the youth about social justice. She passionately wants to contribute to social development in South Africa and the African continent at large.

 

 

 

Emma Green matriculated in 2014 from Herschel Girls Senior School, where she served as Head Girl. She is currently studying for a Bachelor of Social Sciences degree in Politics, Philosophy and Economics. A passionate advocate of improving education, Emma is the deputy chairperson of Equal Education UCT, an active volunteer in the outreach programme TeachOut, and a tutor in the UCT Statistical Sciences Department as well as a number of schools. She is a devoted piano player and an avid reader. Recognizing that education, while a serious challenge, is key to Africa’s growth and development, Emma hopes to create her own education-focused NGO to equip future generations with basic and entrepreneurial skills.

 

 

 

Tafadzwa Kwaramba completed his A-levels at St. John’s College, Harare, in 2013. He is currently studying towards a BSc Chemical Engineering degree. He is actively involved in student affairs, and has been a class representative since 2015. He is Secretary General of the 2016 Engineering and Built Environment Student Council. Tafadzwa loves soccer and plays for the UCT first team. His long-term goal is to contribute towards socio-economic development and political stability in the region, and to promote regional trade and economic integration.

 

 

 

 

 

Natalie Mangondo graduated from St John's College, Harare, with flying colours, and began her academic career at UCT in 2013, aged only 16. She has been involved with various student societies and leadership programmes. She is currently working on creating a non-profit organisation, African Pioneers Association, which aims at developing ethical and innovative leaders at university level. In the long term, she would like to focus on empowerment of women and education of children, areas which she sees as key to the future prosperity of Africa.

 

 

 

 

 

Naledi Masilo is currently studying for a BSc degree in Sociology and International Relations. A youth activist who was born and raised in Johannesburg, she has worked with various community organizations, and cites Eco-Access as one of the most influential. This organisation works with people with disabilities, and seeks to create a platform for equal opportunity for all. At UCT, she is currently Secretary-General of the house committee of her residence, and Vice-Chairperson of the UCT Residence Secretariat. She has also served on various committees of the SRC, and on the UNASA Executive Committee. As a member of the SAIIA Youth Policy Committee, she has represented the youth of South Africa on a number of platforms. She is a passionate musician, and sees her long-term goal as the upliftment of women and the youth.

 

 

 

Kolosa Ntombini matriculated from Queenstown Girls’ High School in 2014. At UCT, she is studying for a BSc degree in Environmental & Geographical Sciences, and currently serves as a mentor at Fuller Hall Residence. Originally from a rural area in the Eastern Cape, she takes keen interest in rural development, and is particularly concerned about finding ways to help rural communities to adapt to climate change. She is committed to the international goals of sustainable development. She enjoys playing chess.

 

 

 

 

 

Ryan Duncan Prithraj matriculated from Glenwood High School in 2012 as one of the top achievers in Kwa-Zulu Natal Province. At UCT, he is studying for a Bachelor of Law degree, and currently serves as Vice-President (External Relations) of the 2016 Students Representative Council. He has previously served as the Chairperson of the Humanities Students' Council and as President of the UCT Branch of the United Nations Association of South Africa. He believes that empowerment of civil society through educational initiatives at the grass-roots level is the key driver of social, political and economic change.

 

 

 

 

Mathew Saunders matriculated from Sol Plaatje Secondary School in Mahikeng, North-West, in 2013. He is studying for a Bachelor of Business Science degree majoring in Finance and Accounting. In 2014, he was House Committee member and a residence tutor for Kopano Residence, which he has also represented as an internal league football player. He is currently a mentor in his Faculty, and a committee member of the UCT Consulting Club. He has already co-founded a start-up company, and sees his long-term contribution as the unlocking of Africa's potential through upliftment of its social and economic conditions.

 

 

 

 

Nkululeko Tsoketsi matriculated from Springs Boys' High School and is currently studying Economics and Finance at UCT. He has served as senior mentor of the largest male residence at UCT, and as Deputy Chairperson of UCT's Arts and Literacy society, Connoisseur. He is currently the Tournament Director of the Thethani Debating League, which works across 16 schools. He has participated in the Building Entrepreneurial Leaders Programme of the global firm, Bain and Company. His passion for challenge, travel and tackling issues of gender inequality and poverty earned him an invitation to the 2016 Global Engagement Summit in Chicago, and to the 2016 Hansen Summer Institute in San Diego, California. He intends to use the skills he has gained to more effectively address issues of youth development in Africa.

 

 

 

Carla Wilby matriculated in 2013 from Kingswood College in Grahamstown. She is currently in her third year studying towards a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering. She is the Training Manager of Robogals UCT, a society dedicated to improving the representation of women in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), particularly Engineering, by exposing schoolgirls to robotics and electronics. She is a mentor in the EBE mentoring programme, and is an active member and project leader in the society, Engineers Without Borders. In the long run, she would like to make a significant national contribution in the areas of sustainability and energy efficiency.
