DETAWU (Democratic Transport and Allied Workers Union) is a trade union that represents and protects the interests of workers by promoting fair labour practices, improved working conditions, and workers' rights.

Any eligible employee within sectors and workplaces organised by DETAWU may apply for membership. Employees are encouraged to contact a shop steward or branch official for guidance on joining.

As a DETAWU member, you benefit from:

• Representation in workplace disputes.
• Collective bargaining on wages and conditions of service.
• Workplace protection and support.
• Labour law advice and guidance.
• Access to union meetings, training, and information.
• Participation in decision-making processes affecting workers.

You can join by:

1. Obtaining a membership form from a DETAWU Shop Steward.
2. Completing and signing the membership form.
3. Authorising the deduction of union subscriptions.
4. Submitting the completed form to the union office.

Union subscriptions are monthly membership fees paid by members to support the operations and activities of the union. These funds help the union provide representation, training, legal support, and member services.

A Shop Steward:

• Represents members in workplace matters.
• Assists with grievances and disciplinary matters.
• Communicates union information to members.
• Promotes worker unity and recruitment.
• Acts as a link between members and union leadership.

DETAWU primarily represents its members. While collective bargaining benefits may extend to all employees in a workplace, members receive direct representation and support from the union.

You should:

1. Report the matter to your Shop Steward.
2. Provide all relevant information and documentation.
3. Cooperate with the grievance process.
4. Attend meetings as required.

The union will advise and support you throughout the process.

Collective bargaining is the process where the union negotiates with employers on behalf of workers regarding:

• Salaries and wages.
• Benefits.
• Working conditions.
• Leave provisions.
• Health and safety matters.
• Other employment-related issues.

Members can:

• Attend general meetings and AGMs.
• Join recruitment drives.
• Participate in campaigns and workplace initiatives.
• Stand for election to leadership positions.
• Provide feedback and proposals through their Shop Steward.
