South African Sign Language Interpreter

Michelle is a South African Sign Language interpreter (SASLi) at the OIC Disability Service. She holds a diploma in South African Sign Language interpreting from UNISA and an advanced diploma from North West University. Her position entails providing South African Sign Language interpreting to students as well as staff members at UCT. The core focus of her responsibilities is to ensure clear lines of communication and access between the Deaf persons and the university stakeholders. The scope of her work extends to the UCT broader community with the provision of SASLi at UCT events such as graduation, Open Day as well as extra-curricular activities. Michelle has been employed at the Disability service since April 2023 and has been a Sign Language interpreter for over 18 years.

Michelle is a Child of Deaf adults (CODA) and immersed within the Deaf community before becoming a professional Sign Language Interpreter. Michelle has done extensive work in the fields of Theatre, Medical Interpreting, Deaf Blind guide and interpreting, bible translation, research and has experience in interpreting at non-profit organisations and government events. Her experience enhances the quality of the services that is provided to students, staff and visitors at UCT.
