Disability Advocacy Specialist

Lesego Modutle started her journey at UCT in 2012 as the first full-time South African Sign Language interpreter.  She then left UCT in 2013 to present Hectic Nine 9 on SABC 2, before travelling to London in 2015 to study British Sign Language which she passed with flying colours.  She returned to UCT in 2016 and was appointed as Disability Advocacy Specialist, a job which has seen her portfolio expand exponentially.  Her responsibilities include empowering first year students and orientation leaders with information on the disability support and services available at UCT, assisting students with accessing reasonable accommodations such as funding and assistive devices in relation to their disability.  Lesego hosts disability awareness and inclusivity workshops and gives training sessions and talks on how to create a disability inclusive environment.  She holds a BA Degree in Media Studies from the University of Free State as well as a Post-graduate Diploma in Disability Studies from the University of Cape Town.  You might recognize Lesego Modutle, who is known in her Sign Language interpreting profession and on social media as “Lesego Signs” as she interpreted the President’s “Fellow South Africans” speeches during Lockdown and is also the Sign Language interpreter on etv News at 8pm.
