The 2021 Cape Town Fire impacted several precincts at the University of Cape Town, gutting the highly regarded JW Jagger Library – the location of the original library – and the Reading Room of the academic Archive. In addition, the fire affected the African Studies Library and a unique African Film collection. The holdings and services had to be relocated as part of the recovery effort from this disaster. On UCT Open Day, UCT Libraries will host visits to 1 of the 2 locations that speak to the impact of the 2021 Fire on its business, as a partner to research at the university and to support Cultural Heritage through its holdings of primary materials and the African Studies collection sourced from across the continent.
