The South African Research Chairs Initiative (SARChI) is part of an effort by the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI) and National Research Foundation (NRF) to expand the scientific research and innovation capacity of South Africa, improving the country’s international research competitiveness while responding to social and economic challenges.

Each Chair is built around an established researcher of exceptional standing, tasked with leading a focused, strategic research programme in a field of national or international importance. Beyond producing new knowledge, Chairs are also expected to significantly increase the number of master’s and doctoral graduates they supervise, strengthening the pipeline of the critical high-level skills the country needs.
