DETAWU is pleased to announce a significant achievement for workers at the University of Cape Town (UCT) following the successful conclusion of the substantive Collective Agreement signed with the PASS unions on 27 February 2026.

As a result of this agreement and continued engagement on matters affecting employees, the University Council has approved a year-end closure period between Christmas and New Year for the next three years, covering 2026, 2027, and 2028.

This milestone represents an important step forward in promoting employee wellbeing, work-life balance, and recognition of the valuable contribution made by UCT staff throughout the year.

Under the approved arrangement:

UCT will close during the period between Christmas and New Year in 2026, 2027, and 2028.
Staff will receive these closure days in addition to their annual leave entitlement.
Employees will not be required to use annual leave during the approved closure period.
The arrangement will be reviewed after the three-year period to assess its effectiveness and impact on staff wellbeing and university operations.
Essential services staff required to work during the closure period will be granted time off at a later stage in consultation with their line managers.

This achievement highlights the value of collective bargaining and constructive engagement in advancing the interests of workers. The additional time off will provide employees with a meaningful opportunity to rest, spend time with family and loved ones, and return to work refreshed and ready for the year ahead.

DETAWU encourages all members to continue supporting initiatives that strengthen worker wellbeing, protect labour rights, and improve conditions of employment.

A Victory for UCT Workers

The approval of the festive shutdown demonstrates the positive outcomes that can be achieved through unity, representation, and effective negotiation. DETAWU remains committed to protecting and advancing the interests of workers while striving for improved working conditions across all workplaces where our members are represented.
