Ms Pheladi Gwangwa

Pheladi Gwangwa is a director for core business at Chueu Inc, a law firm based in Pretoria, where she is responsible for organizational development. This entails aligning strategy, people and processes; performance management of the professional staff – attorneys; and ensuring operational efficiencies as well as overall optimization of the business.

She has served as Station Manager (Managing Director) for 702, a talk radio station based in Johannesburg, South Africa, from 2005 to 2016. Under her leadership, 702 prospered and grew its audience from a listenership of 238 000 to 920 000, which gave the station an opportunity to grow its gross revenue from about R70 million in 2005 to R320m when she left the station. Gwangwa was the recipient of the Woman in the Media Award in 2008. 702 won many industry awards under her leadership, including the BBC’s Best Radio Station of the Year Award in 2007, which was a continent-wide search.

She worked at the South African Industry Regulator for Communications (ICASA) and has practised as an attorney at the State Attorney.

She previously served as the chairperson of the National Association of Broadcasters, the Broadcast Research Council as well as the B-BBEE ICT Sector Council. She is currently an independent non-executive director of Clientele, a financial services company listed on the JSE. She is also a Patron of Future of the African Daughter (FOTAD), a girl-child development project for girls aged 12 to 19 years who come from previously disadvantaged areas.

Qualifications: she has a master’s degree in communications law from the University of the Witwatersrand, an LLB from the same university, and a Bachelor’s degree in law (BProc) from the University of the North, now known as the University of Limpopo.
