Emeritus Professor Brian Kantor

Emeritus Professor Brian Kantor had a long academic career at the University of Cape Town including a term as Dean of the Faculty of Commerce (1997–2001). His career included stints as a Visiting Professor at Carnegie-Mellon University Pittsburgh PA (1978–79) and Columbia University Graduate School of Business, New York (1994).

He joined Investec Securities as Investment Strategist in 2001 and Investec Wealth and Investment in 2008 in the same capacity. He currently serves as Chairman of the Investec Research Institute, Investec Wealth & Investment.

Emeritus Professor Kantor has served on government boards and commissions, has consulted within the financial arena and held directorships at various listed companies. This diverse experience has spanned South Africa, the United States, Canada and Hong Kong.

His research on monetary and financial economics has been widely and frequently published. He has received accolades for various business achievements including his work as founding Chairman of the V&A Waterfront Company (1988–2001).

Emeritus Professor Kantor’s research has focused on monetary and financial economics. Perhaps his most influential work was “Rational Expectations and Economic Thought”, Journal of Economic Literature, September 1979, which was translated into Japanese and Spanish. His current research interests include an analysis of monetary policy, corporate governance issues and the links between the rand exchange rate and the behaviour of the JSE. Other published research has involved applying economic reasoning to the risks and returns in limited over cricket.
